For the rest of the year we will be working on an individual research paper and then a group project. The individual paper will be on a topic of choice (that is agreed on with me) and will count as a large percentage (about 40%) of the 4th quarter grade for each student. The project will then be a collaborative effort among 3-5 students in which multiple paper topics are synthesized. Each student will earn a project grade that will be the final exam grade.
RESEARCH PAPER: · 5 to 8 paragraphs · 2 to 4 typed pages (double spaced, 11 point font, Times New Roman, 1” margins) · Use of at least 3 sources beside Brinkley’s American History textbook · Use proper MLA citation and include a works cited page (be sure that your sources are legitimate) http://honolulu.hawaii.edu/library/mlahcc7th.html - you will be able to choose between parenthetical citations and footnotes, but must have the works cited page at the end · Based on a specific research question and then a “unique” thesis statement that results from research and note-taking · Topic, Research Question and Hypothesis are due on Wednesday, May 18th · Research and notes will be due by Wednesday, May 25th (but may be turned in sooner - see expectations for the notes below) · Paper will be due by Friday, June 3rd
The research paper will focus on a current events issue. The specific topic is up to you, but you must get clearance from me on a topic and research question before proceeding with your research, note taking, and writing.
Examples of plausible topics: · The banking crisis · The housing crisis · The overall economy · War on Terrorism · War in Iraq · War in Afghanistan · American foreign policy during the “Arab Spring,” (i.e. toward Libya, etc.) · American relations with China (or another country…Russia, etc.) · The U.S. debt · Preview of the 2012 Presidential election · Energy · President Obama’s first term so far · The Bush Doctrine (George W. Bush) · Immigration policy · Life in America for African-Americans (or Asian-Americans or Hispanic-Americans, etc, etc) · Women in America (or a specific women’s issue) · Poverty in America (or economic inequality, etc) · Medicine or Technology or...???
For your research, you might want to take a look at the following site, which guides you through the research process and has links to MLA formatting and other resources: http://www.nhd.org/eightsteps.htm You can also use the rest of the internet.
Notes: Before beginning your paper you should accumulate good sources, do lots of reading on your topic, and take careful notes. These notes should be in 2-column format. As usual, use the right column for information, trying to break it into MIs and details. For the left column, include the usual Qs, Cs, Cs, etc, but also keep track of your sources and make reminders to yourself of where you might use certain information in your paper (i.e. label as useful in your intro or as a body paragraph topic, etc.)

What if the Kansas-Nebraska Act had not allowed for popular sovereignty in those territories?
What if Abraham Lincoln had not been assassinated?
What if the Compromise of 1877 had not been reached?
What if the 18th amendment had never been passed?
What if the stock market had not crashed in 1929?
What if the American economy had become completely government run during the New Deal?
What if World War II had not begun in 1939?
What ifAmericahad been more prepared forPearl Harbor?
What if you get the idea…
In your group, create a new wikispace site devoted to a “What If” of American history.
Create a new wikispace
Choose a “What If” based on an important event having been very different
Discuss and show what would have been the consequences of this difference in history and compare it to the reality
Include text and images
Utilize tech tools that we have used this year and any others you’d like to incorporate
Create multiple pages to organize the information appropriately
